A Long Tube
The underground is a railway system of long tunnels that run at different

levels under the ground, so that trains can go without meeting each other.
Londoners call the London Underground the “Tube” for the shape of

the tunnels. It is the oldest underground railway in the world. It started
running in 1863 with one line of six stations, using steam engines.

Now, there are 11 electric lines serving 274 stations with over 408 kms
of track. Each line has a different colour. The London Underground

system uses two kinds of trains, a big type used for the rectangular
tunnels and a small type for the round tunnels, deep under the ground.

The Tube’s logo is called “the roundel”: it consists of a red circle crossed by
a horizontal blue bar and the writing UNDERGROUND in white. INGLESE cl. 5 a Scheda n. 1
