Dopo 10/15 minuti diciamo:
• Can you share with the class your observations, questions and hypothesis?
Accogliamo gli interventi di tutti, poi distribuiamo a ciascun alunno: una sagoma di carta di un abete, facilmente reperi-
bile in internet, un cartoncino verde, un piatto di plastica, un bicchiere con del sale grosso, un bicchiere di plastica tra-
sparente pieno di acqua calda e una bacchetta di legno per mescolare. Successivamente, diamo le seguenti istruzioni.
• Let’s draw the fi r on your green cardboard following the shape with your pencil.
• Cut the fi r Christmas tree shape out of the construction paper and set it on the plate.
• Dip your fi nger in the hot water and taste it. How does it taste?
• Pour some table salt into a measuring spoon, add it to the hot water and stir.
• Pick up the plastic cup, look at the bottom and control if all the salt has dissolved.
• Dip your fi nger again in the water and taste it. How does it taste? Has it changed? Where has the salt gone?
Accogliamo le osservazioni dei bambini e ascoltiamo le loro ipotesi. Conveniamo infi ne che: “The salt is still in the water!
The water has dissolved the salt and now it has become a (slightly cloudy looking) salt-water solution”. Proseguiamo poi
con le istruzioni:
• Add salt until the solution is saturated and undissolved salt starts to gather on the bottom of the cup.
• Pour the salty water onto the plate with the tree shape. Add enough water just to cover the tree.
• Set the plate in a safe warm and dry place to let it dry.

Final Observation
Alcuni giorni dopo, quando l’acqua sarà evaporata, osserviamo insieme gli abeti e verifi chiamo le ipotesi formulate prima
dell’esperimento:
• What happened? Where did the water go? What can you see on the tree?
Conveniamo quindi che: “The water has evaporated and has left behind a haze of salt and some distinct small cubic salt
crystals: you can see the salt again”.

Se abbiamo una lente di ingrandimento, facciamo osservare e descrivere a turno i cristalli di sale formati .
Appuntiamo quindi sulla lavagna le osservazioni e le conclusioni finali ed esortiamo i bambini a ricopiarle: “When you
mix salt with water, it dissolves creating a solution. When you put the solution in a warm place, the water evaporates
and leaves behind the salt. To conclude, we can say that the salt does not disappear in water but dissolves. If we
take a closer look, we can notice that the salt crystals are cubic also with the naked eye”.
Al termine, foriamo ciascun abete e invitiamo i bambini a passarci un nastro, che forniremo loro, per trasformare l’elabo-
