Water Dispersal
The seeds of plants that grow near or in the wa-
ter fall into the water. They can float and can
be carried for a long distance before they find
a good place to grow. A good example is the
palm tree. The coconut falls into the sea where © Freepik.com
the currents move it to its new home.
Fur/feathers dispersal
Some seeds have hooks or stickers that catch
on the fur or feathers of the animals or on
people’s clothing. When the animal finally frees
itself from them, the seeds are far away from
where they started. © Freepik.com
Animal dispersal
Birds and other animals scatter seeds. They
eat berries and fruit. The seeds are left in new
places in the animal droppings.

Explosive action
Incredibly, a number of plant species utilize
explosive force to fling their seeds away.
The sandbox tree, native to tropical America,
has exploding capsules that can launch seeds
up to 100 meters away with speeds of up to © Wikipedia.ord
70 meters per second! The sound of the explosion can be heard
echoing through the forest.
